We did not choose salt and pepper diamonds for our Stardust Collection because they were different. What is a Salt and Pepper Diamond Ring?
It is a completely natural diamond - identical in composition to a flawless white diamond - that simply formed with a far higher concentration of visible inclusions. The black inclusions, the "pepper," are usually uncrystallised carbon in the form of graphite. The white, or "salt," inclusions are typically flaws in the crystal structure or trapped impurities such as nitrogen. Other inclusions can include graphite, hematite, and magnetite - different minerals caught inside the stone at different moments of its formation.
Every white diamond has inclusions. A salt and pepper diamond simply has more of them, and at a scale visible to the eye rather than hidden under magnification. Nothing has been added. Nothing has been treated. How Long Do Natural Salt and Pepper Diamonds Take to Form?
Longer than almost anything else you will ever own.
Diamonds form deep within the Earth's mantle, at depths of 150 to 200 kilometres, where temperatures reach between 1,000 and 1,300 degrees Celsius. Carbon atoms are forced into a crystal lattice under this extreme heat and pressure - and the process is not fast. It typically takes between 1 billion and 3.3 billion years for carbon to complete this transformation. Some of the oldest diamonds ever dated are between 3.3 and 3.5 billion years old - three-quarters of the age of the Earth itself.
Once formed, the diamond does not simply rise to the surface on its own. It takes a rare, powerful volcanic eruption to carry it up from the mantle quickly enough to preserve its crystal structure. Without that eruption, it stays buried. Most do.
What Creates the Unique Inclusions in Salt and Pepper Diamonds?
Three separate forces, all acting on the stone across unimaginable stretches of time.
- Trapped minerals. As the carbon crystallises, it doesn't do so in isolation. The growing crystal is exposed to other minerals and even other diamonds, and these become sealed inside it permanently, creating the marks we now call inclusions. Some of these mineral inclusions can be dated directly, and have been used to determine that certain diamonds formed more than 3.5 billion years ago.
- Ancient seawater. Geoscientists have demonstrated that seawater carried deep into the Earth on the ocean floor can produce the exact salty fluid compositions commonly found inside diamonds. Some diamonds form quickly enough to accidentally trap traces of sodium and potassium from that ancient sea - fragments of an ocean that existed before the inclusion was ever sealed inside the stone.
- Tectonic violence. In subduction zones, where tectonic plates collide and force carbon-bearing rock deep into the mantle, the resulting pressure and heat can trigger diamond formation directly - and diamonds formed this way often carry distinct mineral inclusions that record the exact deep-Earth conditions present at the time.
Salt. Pressure. Collision. None of it was designed. All of it is permanent.
Are Salt and Pepper Diamond Engagement Rings Rare?
Rarer than the price tag suggests - and rare in a way that has nothing to do with cost.
Only around 20% of all diamonds mined are considered gem quality by traditional standards. To produce a single clear, one-carat diamond, up to 250 tons of diamond ore must be sifted through. No one mines specifically for salt and pepper diamonds - they exist only as a byproduct of mining for clear stones and metals.
But here is the part that matters most: no two salt and pepper diamonds are alike, ever. The pattern inside each stone - the exact placement of every inclusion - cannot be replicated, copied, or predicted. The rarest of all are known as galaxy diamonds - a dark grey to black body scattered with white inclusions that genuinely resemble stars against a night sky, much like the centrepiece of our Cosmos ring.
A flawless white diamond is rare because so few exist without imperfection. A salt and pepper diamond is rare because the one in front of you will never exist again, in any stone, anywhere on Earth.

The Journey of a Salt and Pepper Diamond Ring
It begins more than a billion years ago, in heat and pressure no human will ever witness directly. Carbon, forced into crystal form deep in the mantle, slowly becomes diamond - a transformation that, for most stones, simply never reaches the surface.
The ones that do are carried up violently, inside the magma of a deep-source volcanic eruption - a journey from roughly 90 miles below the surface, brought up by the kind of eruption that happens nowhere near often enough to make diamonds common.
Once mined, the stone is sorted. Most rough diamonds with heavy inclusions were historically set aside - used for industrial purposes, or simply discarded, while only the clearest fraction was kept for jewellery. The stones now defined as salt and pepper are the ones that, for decades, the industry overlooked entirely.
Then comes the cut. Because salt and pepper diamonds are more opaque than traditional white diamonds, the cutter is not bound by the same rules used to maximise brilliance - giving far more freedom over shape and silhouette. This is why they are so often found in unusual cuts - kite, hexagon, shield, and rose cuts - each chosen specifically to let the inclusions take centre stage rather than hiding them. The final step is ours. Each stone is set by hand in our Hatton Garden workshop, chosen not despite its inclusions but because of them - because somewhere inside that billion-year process, the stone formed something that belonged in Stardust.
